Bringing Sleeping Beauty To Life At Mickey's Halloween Party

IMG_8005.JPG

This week my family and I went to Mickey’s Halloween Party at Disneyland! I have been taking Mila every year and we dress up in full costume each time. It has become a hobby of mine really to think about our costumes all year and then bring them to life. Each year we always go as character pairs. Her first Mickey’s Halloween Party we dressed as Darla and Nemo from Finding Nemo and then Sid and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story. That year we also dressed up as Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh. Last year we dressed up as Grandma Tala and Moana from the movie Moana and Cruella de Vil and one of the 101 Dalmatians. I love to go big and you can see all our past costumes here #bbbdoeshalloweentime.

This year my family came with us and we came together as our favorite characters from Sleeping Beauty! I was Maleficent, Mila was Princess Aurora and my two cousins and aunt were the three fairy godmothers; Flora, Fauna and Merryweather. It was hysterical and SO much fun to bring these characters to life. Even Mila stayed in character all night as she refused to take her blonde wig off!

A ton of you were asking about how we made these costumes and to be honest it was fairly simple. It just took some time and another family member who knows how to sew to help us. My costume and Mila’s princess dress were bought on Amazon. I bought the green face make-up, purple eyeshadow and liquid eyeliner from Target to recreate Maleficent’s face. I made my staff our of paper towel rolles. I taped them together and painted them black with gold sparkles. I glued sparkly gold foam paper to the top and hot glued a black bird to the top. The black bird I bought at craft store. I bought Mila’s blonde wig on sale at the Disney store. It didn’t come with a gold crown so I thought about buying one. But then I thought with the wig and the crown on top it would probably keep falling off. So, I cut out Aurora’s crown shape from gold sparkle foam paper and hot glued it right onto the wig! It stayed in place all night and worked perfectly. The three fairy godmother costumes were actually all made by hand! We went to the fabric store and purchased all the fabric and a family member helped sew the skirts. We bought fluffy petticoats off Amazon though so the skirts would be poofy. We sprayed black witches hats with fabric paint to match and used tulle to decorate them. The only things that were sewn were the skirts, the capes were just large pieces of fabric fastened together with a safety pin.

I am very close with my two cousins and aunt so putting these costumes together was the absolute BEST! We had so many laughs and when it came time to get dressed up, oh my gosh it was so funny! That whole night we were laughing and pretending to be the actual characters. It was such a joy to have my family join Mila and I in our costume fun this year! (We actually are already thinking about next years costume ;)

Mickey’s Halloween Party

Mickey’s Halloween Party is a special ticketed event held every year at Disneyland. We actually purchase tickets to this every year during Summer when they release the tickets. Come September a lot of the nights are already sold out. If you want to attend next year I couldn’t recommend it enough! Just keep an eye out for when they start to sell the tickets!

Disneyland closes to the public at 6pm on Mickey’s Halloween Party nights. The party begins at 6pm though you can enter the park earlier with your Mickey’s Halloween Party tickets. We like to arrive by 3:30pm. We enter the park take photos and map out our night. There are tons of trick or treat trails all over the park and we like to hit all of them. There are also fun things to see like the Cadaver Dans singing in New Orleans Square and so many more surprises! Plus, the parade and firework show is the BEST! We typically go through a few treat trails and get candy, then stake out our spot for the parade and fireworks show. Since we had a big group we left a few of us at our parade spot while others went through more treat trails and do other things within the park. We traded off. I don’t every ride the attractions during Mickey’s Halloween Party because I like to do the things that they don’t normally have. Though the rides are open and the wait times are really low!

My favorite thing to see is the Headless Horseman ride through the park right before the parade begins. I also love the Haunted Mansion float in the parade! I shared the entire parade on my Facebook page which you can watch by clicking on the link below.

Since the party ends at 11pm we stay until the very, very end! After the parade and firework show we go through more treat trails. This year we stopped by the fun dance party in Tomorrowland. At the dance party there are characters the come out and dance. We also stopped by and met Darth Vader for the first time. I thought Mila would have been scared, but man she hasn’t stopped talking about meeting “Darf!”
