Homemade Graham Crackers + Juicy Baby Thighs
Well this recipe for Homemade Graham Crackers has nothing to do with juicy baby thighs, but holy moly look at baby Maya! She is growing so fast and is such a happy little being. Her thighs are nearly edible, as are her cheeks. A jolly little bug that I thought you’d like to see before we get into graham crackers.
Really though, why on Earth would you want to bake your own graham crackers?! You can buy them at the store and they are perfect. You all know I love a good S’more and a good old store bought graham cracker is the best for it! These were my thoughts exactly until quarantine hit and we all had to stay in our homes for a few months. I started trying my baking hand at things I hadn’t made in forever. This recipe comes straight from my mother who is now famous for saying “No, we don’t need to buy that! Put it back. We can make it better at home!” To be fair she was right. Even though kids sometimes made fun of my homemade everything lunch and its lack of Doritos and prepackaged snack treats. My mom made everything at home and in the long run it was immensely better for us. Now look at me Mom! I’m making it all at home. (Well, for the most part ;)
These homemade graham crackers are a total dream to be honest and I will 100% be making these during the Fall. My favorite time of year. These are great at anytime but I love the warm, nutty notes these crackers (yes, they are basically cookies) give off. And while they will taste great in s’more, I personally love them crumbled on top of vanilla ice cream or with my afternoon coffee!
Bake some and let me know your thoughts! I hope as the country slowly starts to open back up that you all stay safe!
Simple Homemade Graham Crackers
What You Need; 1 cup whole wheat flour (this is what will help give it that nutty graham flavor), 1 cup flour, 1 cup brown sugar, 2 tsp vanilla, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp, baking powder, 1 tsp salt, 1 egg, 1 stick melted butter, 1/3 cup honey
What You Do
-Start by whisking your melted butter and sugar together until they come together smooth.
-Next whisk in your egg, vanilla, and honey until smooth.
-In a separate bowl sift together your flours, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Then slowly fold the dry ingredients into your wet until a dough forms. You’ll want to slowly add in the flour and mix it in fully before adding more to ensure your dough doesn’t have any lumps.
-Lay out a piece of plastic wrap and pour your dough into the center. Wrap up your dough and let it chill for at least an hour. This is a really sticky dough so you must chill it before you roll it out and slice it.
-Once your dough has chilled, on a floured surface roll out your dough till it is about 1/4 of an inch thick and slice into squares. The thinner you roll out your dough the crispier it will be when baked.
-I like to use a fork to add some dots to mimic a store bought graham cracker! Though you can skip that detail.
-Place your graham crackers onto a baking sheet lined with a silicon baking mat or parchment paper and bake at 375 degrees for about 10-12 minutes. Once they brown around the edges they are ready. Let them cool a bit before transferring them off the baking sheet to to ensure they stay in one piece!
-These keep for about one week in an air tight container or zip top bag.
