Gochujang Popcorn
You most likely know that one of my favorite flavor combinations is sweet + spicy! I love a good spicy flavor that has a sweet side to it, especially when it comes to snacks. Sweet + spicy makes for the most satisfying snack and truthfully, what is better than popcorn. When I think of the perfect snack to enjoy while movie watching or hanging out with friends my mind goes straight to popcorn. Mix that ultimate snack with something sweet + spicy and you’ve landed on a match made in Heaven.
Lately I’ve been obsessed with gochujang which is a sweet and spicy red chili paste. It goes great with marinades and adds such a unique savory flavor to sauces. I mix it with butter and honey for a sticky, sweet and subtly spicy popcorn topping.
You must give it a try! Find the how to below and watch the quick video to see it all come together.
Gochujang Popcorn
Ingredients
2 tbs vegetable oil
1/3 cup popcorn
1 tbs gochujang
2 tbs unsalted butter
2 tbs honey
1 tsp sea salt
Directions
Step 1: Start by popping your popcorn. I like to do this on the stove top in a large pot. Place a large pot over medium heat and warm 2 tbs vegetable oil and toss in two popcorn kernels. Once the two kernels pop the oil is hot enough for you to add the rest of the popcorn kernels. Gently shake the pot over the heat and slowly the kernels will begin to pop. Put the lid on and let the popcorn pop, shaking it every 30 seconds or so until the popping comes to a stop.
You could also use microwave popcorn, just use two full bags of microwave popcorn. If you do use microwave popcorn, I’d try to use the least flavored one you can find so it doesn’t end up being too salty or clash with the sauce.
Step 2: Once the popcorn is popped, pour it into a large container or bowl preferably one that has a lid.
Step 3: In a small sauce pan melt together the butter, gochujang, honey and salt. Once that mixture is melted, pour it over the popcorn.
Step 4: Put the lid on to the container or bowl and give it a good shake until the sauce has coated the popcorn. If you don’t have a lid that fits your container or bowl, use two spoons and toss the popcorn together with the sauce.
Step 5: Enjoy right away!
