Salted Caramel Marshmallow Squares
What is more classic than a Rice Krispy Treat? I grew up enjoying them and still to this day they stand as one of the best (and easiest) treats to whip up when you have a sugar craving. That is if you like chewy, crispy, marshmallow goodness. However, we are rethinking this iconic treat today and adding a salted caramel flavor. Now, my mind and tastebuds are forever changed! When I say I’m never making regular Rice Krispy Treats again, I MEAN IT! These are ten times better and will leave you stunned in the best way possible.
They aren’t much more work than their slightly boring older sister, so add Salted Caramel Marshmallow Squares to your ‘Must Make’ list!
Salted Caramel Marshmallow Squares
Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
2 tsp sea salt
6 cups mini marshmallows
10 cups rice crispy cereal
parchment paper
baking dish
cooking spray
Directions
Step 1: Over medium heat in a large pot melt the butter and brown sugar together until the sugar dissolves.
Step 2: Stir in the heavy whipping cream and continue stirring. Let it bubble and boil while you stir it every few seconds. Continue doing this for 6 minutes. Once the caramel has thickened a bit and can coat the back of your spatula it is time to add the marshmallows.
Step 3: Turn off the heat and add the marshmallows. Stir until melted.
Step 4: Add in 1 tsp of the sea salt and stir.
Step 5: Add in 5 cups of the rice crispy cereal and stir until the cereal is coated.
Step 6: Add in the remaining rice crispy cereal and stir.
Step 7: Spray a baking dish with cooking spray and pour in the marshmallow cereal mixture.
Step 8: Use parchment paper to gently press the marshmallow cereal mixture into the baking dish. Sprinkle with the remaining sea salt and let it sit for an hour.
Step 9: Slice into large squares and enjoy! I like to drizzle store bought caramel sauce on top before serving but that is optional. Store any extras in an air tight container or zip top bag.
