Maya's Room Reveal!
Maya just turned three months exactly and we finally finished her little nursery room! At the start of my pregnancy this little room was just a storage space for every item that didn’t fit within the rest of our house. If any of you are fans of the show FRIENDS, think Monica’s secret closest stashed to the brimmed with every odd and end you can think of! When we moved into our house just a little over a year ago we always had hoped this small room would eventually become a baby’s room, but while we waited and tried to get pregnant it was our catch all area. Once I became pregnant with Maya I still had reservations about turning the room into a nursery just because of the miscarriage I had right before. We didn’t start clearing it out until halfway through my second trimester.
Right away we knew we wanted to somehow fit a bed in the room along with a crib and all the baby needs. Mostly so when my mom visits from Northern California she would have a nice place to sleep. Prior to putting the bed in, my mom slept on our couch. Ever since Maya has arrived, the bed has come in handy! We actually have been having Maya sleep in her crib since coming home from the hospital. Our own bedroom doesn’t have enough space for a bassinet. But with both Ryan and Mila moving from our room to their own room before hitting four months, I thought it would be fine to just have Maya start out in her own crib. I however, slept on the bed during those first few weeks of having a newborn! Though, with the bed plus the crib, and changing area the small space got even smaller. We had to get creative and make the most of this tiny room. I love how everything is nestled inside and really there is more than enough room to enjoy! I decided to use basic bedding and a bright orange cheetah print blanket (both from Target) for the bed. You can see that Maya’s room is pretty funky with bright doses of color for fun, but overall the room is pretty simple. Mostly because we didn’t have the space to get too crazy.
We decided to really pack a decor punch by adding Chasing Paper removable wallpaper to one of the walls. I love how the Chasing Paper wallpaper ties the whole room together. It somehow makes the room feel more warm and homey. We chose their Stripes Away pattern in Marigold because I felt it was funky enough to catch your eye and make a statement. Yet, not so bold that it stands out too much and takes away from everything else in the room. It actually makes the room feel larger than it is somehow! We also chose to go with Chasing Paper removable wallpaper because if we ever change our mind or move Mila and Maya into the same room, we can simply remove it with no harm done! I do have to say too, that Dan installed the wallpaper in less than 2 hours. It was actually so easy, easier than I thought! So if installation is a concern, it shouldn’t be! You all know how much I adored Mila’s bright green crib from Crate & Barrel Kids! We had to use it again for Maya! I love the color and the bright pop it gives. Crate & Barrel Kids carries the same crib, but just in basic colors now.
We also had a neon sign made by Sketch + Etch Neon that spells out Maya. I thought that would be so fun and exciting for the girls to turn on when they are playing in there. It is such a cool element! We chose Sketch + Etch Neon because their neon signs are not made with glass, do not generate any heat, or make noise when turned on. You can see in some of the photos below the soft pink glow it gives off. Our sign is made with the medium letters, in classic font, and in the color pink. In case you are curious. Now with the bed and crib area taking up the majority of the space, we had to get clever with the other side of the room! To host a few more decorative items we installed some shelves I bought at Ikea. I decided to go with three gold wire bookshelves to tie in that golden/Marigold color. The room doesn’t have a closet but it does have this little nook type space that was empty. My cousin actually helped a ton here and built these shelves inside the space. Giving us an area to store clothing! I keep blankets and extra sheets at the very top in a big basket. Hang little dresses and sweaters. Then on the shelves I added large bins that I keep all of Maya’s baby clothes in. The bins are organized from onesies to pajamas to outfits. At the very bottom in a basket I keep all her shoes. (The majority of Maya’s clothing used to be Mila’s :) I use an over the door hook to hang our baby carrier wraps and a diaper changing clutch I can grab on the go if I need to. I also hang my diaper backpack there too if I want it out of the way.
One thing you’ll notice is our baby monitor. We have been using the Miku Smart Baby Monitor and really like it. It tracks the baby’s breathing, sleep patterns, and room conditions. It also came in REAL handy when Maya got sick just a few weeks after being born. She ended up getting a bug from Mila, but since she was so little it was more scarier than it would have been had she been older. In the middle of the night Maya was making this awful sound, and seemed to be struggling to breath. The Miku actually takes video and saves it automatically. I was able to pull the video of Maya making the sound and text it to my mom (who is a nurse) and our pediatrician. I ended up taking Maya to the ER and in the end she just had a nasty cold. One of my more dramatic mom paranoid moments :)
If you guys remember, Mila and I put together the changing station area in hopes of getting her excited about her little sisters arrival! The changing station is from Target and the baskets we initially used were from Target, but I had to get larger ones to store more things. The baskets you see on the changing station are from Amazon. In those I store diapers, wipes, and swaddle blankets. The white bins are from Target and I keep all our creams, lotions, and baby massage oils in there + burp cloths. With the space being so tiny I had to create a home for everything. It keeps things organized and makes putting things away a breeze! Also, if I can’t fit it then we don’t need it. So I have just what we need. Such a difference from my first baby when I had a wipe warmer and tons of other things I truly need for my baby. ;) I keep a small sound machine on the bookshelf and if we need to use a humidifier I can place it between one of the baskets in the changing area.
Maya’s room turned out just perfect with the best amount of funk and sweetest. I also tied in her big brother with a photo of him carelessly running through Disneyland on the shelve nearest to the changing station. I added another small photo of Ryan looking at the ocean nestled on the gold bookshelves. He is always keeping watch over his little sisters.
Thank you for coming along and taking a look inside Maya’s room! We are so proud of this small space and I often sit in here with both girls and play. Actually every time I change the baby’s diaper Mila comes in and plays with the baby toys. It is such a happy place, put together for our littlest lady!
